This book is is the heart wrenching memoir of Emily Niliwan Nili, the wife to an Ex-Ambassador of Papua New Guinea to the United States. She is an advocate for women’s rights in Papua New Guinea and Australia. She stands for all the injustices of her nation and shines a light on women’s issues worldwide. This dynamic woman has been an Australia resident for 20 years and in 2016 was falsely accused of black magic, witchcraft and sorcery by her husband. Meanwhile her two children found themselves locked out of their family home and were homeless while she was in Australia. Emily’s story is not unique but is the tale of many voiceless and defenceless women who are tortured and burnt alive by their accusers every year in Papua New Guinea for crimes they did not commit.
These grotesque human rights violations perpetuate because the police say there is lack of evidence and no one in the community will testify out of fear of being accused of sorcery themselves. She went through a divorce that led to a dark period of her life where she experienced server depression. She felt lost and deserted and she believes that she is alive today purely by the grace and power of God that pulled her through.
